We generally recommend one of the excellent free AV solutions available. Currently our favourite free solution is Microsoft's Security Essentials which offers good protection and doesn't slow your computer down.
Malware Removal
Malware sneaks onto your computer to try and sell you a worthless product or even to steal personal info. One of the best ways of removing these infections is Malwarebytes Free. There is also a paid version offering real time protection.
File Sharing
If you download music or other files then you should look to some sort of extra protection like PeerBlock, a free program that is invaluable in weeding out infected files. It's free and updates automatically on a daily basis.
